The Fairy Who Sneezed

By Dave Gore

Violet was a pretty fairy she enjoyed everything about fairyland, but she had one small problem, anytime she went to colour the flowers to brighten them up or to shake the pollen so more flowers would grow after a while she would sneeze, not just a little sneeze like

Achoo,

Not even a little bit bigger sneeze like

Achoo

But a gigantic sneeze like

 Achoo

When violet sneezed it was like the wind traveling so fast that nobody could keep up with it, like a train roaring along the track and when she sneezed it was not just the once, but time after time it was like the rain hitting a drum, you could hear it for miles around.

Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo

Well poor Violet was so worried that one of these times she would sneeze so hard and fast that her nose would not be able to stay on her face, she had tried covering her face with a mask, she had tried holding her nose shut so she couldn’t breath in any of the pollen but nothing seemed to work, the only way to stop Violets sneezing was to fly high up above the clouds, then after a while the sneezing would start to ease of and slow down from

Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo

To

Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo

And then

Achoo, Achoo, Achoo

And then last of all just a little, Achoo

Now violet could have just stayed away from the flowers and this would have solved her problem, but she liked all the colours and the nice smell that all of them gave off that she just had to see them.

Because of the problem Violet had with her sneezing all of the animals and birds that lived in fairyland would run of fly away to hide so that they didn’t get blown away and maybe right out of fairyland.

Well once a rabbit had poked his head out of his burrow to see if it was ok to go into the farmer’s field to get a carrot for his dinner and because he was still a little sleepy he hadn’t heard Violet sneezing, well as his ears popped out of his burrow they nearly flew off.

Well the poor rabbit didn’t know what to do, he took hold of both of his ears and tried to pull them back inside the burrow, but each time that he nearly had them back inside the ears would just jump from his hands again and try to fly away.

Luckily for the rabbit Violet was now flying up towards the clouds so the wind her sneezing was causing wasn’t as strong as it was earlier, eventually the rabbit managed to get his ears back inside the burrow, he ran to his mirror to see if they were all there, he sighed a big relive when he saw that they were all in on piece.

Another time a small deer that had been having her lunch eating the berries of off the bushes heard Violets first sneeze and ran away behind a large rock so that she wouldn’t get blown away, well violets sneezing became so loud that day that when she had finished sneezing, all the small deer could hear was a loud ringing in her ears, it took most of the day for her to hear again properly.

It wasn’t as if no-one had tried to help Violet stop sneezing all the fairies had given advise on different ways that they had heard you could stop sneezing but none had seemed to work, once they thought they had found a cure as when they put some flowers near Violet she didn’t sneeze, they shook them just a little so the pollen would fall from the flowers but still no sneeze, they all danced around in delight giving Violet big hugs and kisses, even Violet was happy.

But then it started.

It started very small just like the sound of a pin dropping on the floor so small that you could hardly hear it

Achoo

And it didn’t get any louder just that small

Achoo

And it only happened once not like before when it was like the train roaring along the track or the rain hitting a drum just a little.

Achoo

Well I think I can put up with that said Violet to the other fairies who were all standing there, then Violet noticed the strange look on the other fairies faces, why are you all staring at me she asked,  look, look at your face said one now scared fairy, why said Violet,  just look they all replied,  so Violet went over and picked up a hand mirror and looked into it,  she nearly jumped back in fright, for before her was this head and face that were twice the size they should have been,

O my she cried.

And then

Achoo

Achoo. Achoo

Achoo. Achoo, Achoo. Achoo, Achoo. Achoo

Not getting louder but faster

Not even stronger, just like the wind that whispers through the grass.

Well Violet quickly flew as fast as she could upwards towards the clouds and with each flap of her tiny wings another Achoo would come from her mouth and each one was getting a little stronger, pushing her as if she was trying to push her back down towards the ground.

Violet finally made it above the clouds but the sneezing didn’t stop like it had before when she was there it was still only a little Achoo but getting stronger.

O my what am I to do know thought Violet I can’t stay up here forever, then all of a sudden it stopped, not even one little

Achoo

Violet found that she still was holding the mirror she had picked up earlier, she was scared to look into it but slowly she raised it up towards her face, her head and face had not changed they were still twice the size they should have been.

Then without a warning the biggest and noisiest ever

Achoo

It only happened that once but it was so strong that all the clouds just disappeared from the sky, the sun and the moon started to race around the world turning day into night and night into day in seconds.

The flowers on the ground below didn’t know if they should open up for the morning or close to go to sleep at night and rabbit just gave trying to get a carrot and went back to bed to sleep.

All the time this was happening Violet was traveling the other way from the wind she was causing, the sneeze had been so big it had knocked her backwards, after what seemed forever Violet started to slow down, the nights and the days started to get longer until she was now just standing still on top a cloud and the sun was back in the sky where it belonged.

Somehow she had managed to hold onto the mirror through all this and so slowly she lifted it towards her face, what a relief she said as she looked into the mirror her head and face was now back to normal, her hair was a little wind swept but that could be fixed.

Wow that was scary she said to herself I will never try that cure again, but she was still unhappy that she could not control the sneezing.

Weeks passed and every now and then Violet would go and look and smell the flowers And like before the sneezing would start again

Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo, Achoo

Then one day while walking in the enchanted forest she came upon clearing, there in the middle of the clearing was a flower she had never seen before, it was the most beautiful and scented flower she had ever set eyes on, it was standing there on it’s own with not another flower in sight, why there wasn’t even another one like it anywhere to be found.

It was such a nice flower that Violet couldn’t just walk away and leave it to be alone It had all the colours of the rainbow in it and the scent it gave off to her smelt like Peaches and Cream one of her favourite sweets.

She bent down and shook it slightly the pollen from it drifted on the breeze and as soon as the pollen touched the ground another flower would pop up out of the ground, soon the whole of the clearing was covered in these beautiful flowers.

It took a while but eventually Violet said to herself I’m not sneezing, she should have been, she was covered in the flowers pollen from head to toe, she had it in her hair up her nose and even in her ears.

This is great she thought a flower that doesn’t make me sneeze, but I can’t stay here forever even though I would like to.

Soon she was up flying back from the forest to fairyland and all the time the pollen that had been collected on her dropping off and landing on the ground, with each piece of pollen that hit the ground a flower grew straight away.

When Violet got back to fairyland all of the pollen had disappeared from her that is all but one speck which remained stuck to the side of her nose, she looked into the mirror to tidy up her hair a little and saw the pollen, it was so small and it looked like a small ruby that had attached itself to her nose and the scent it gave off was still just like peaches and cream.

Violet scratched at the small piece of pollen but it wouldn’t come off of her nose, she tried and tried but it would not budge, O well it will come off when I shower she said and thought no more of it.

After returning to her house Violet jumped into the shower to get ready for the dance the fairies always had in the evenings, she enjoyed dancing and chatting to everyone who was there.

She made herself some dinner and then dressed for the dance, she wore a beautiful red silk dress that one of her spider friends had spun for her, and then to finish of she put on a matching pair of red glass slippers.

She hadn’t been at the dance for very long when another fairy called Buttercup said that she liked the red ruby that Violet had put on the side of her nose, that’s not a ruby Violet said, it’s just a piece of pollen that came off this flower I found, I thought it would have come off in the shower, but I will leave it there for now if you think it looks nice.

The following day Violet decided to go and brighten up some of the flowers that grew in the nearby pasture as they were starting to lose there colour, she warned all the other fairies and all the animals who lived nearby and made her way into the field.

Well was she surprised when she was able to colour the flowers and shake the pollen from them and not one sneeze, not even a little one.

That is strange she said to herself, why I don’t sneeze at all now when I’m around flowers.

Her nose started to itch a little so she put her finger on it to scratch the itch and felt the small piece of red pollen that was still attached to her nose she thought that it would have fallen off by now and as she touched it she smelt the peaches and cream that she adored so much.

I wonder she said to herself and without another word she made her way back to fairyland, there she went to see the wise grand fairy, he had been around for as long as the world existed.

What can I do for you Violet he asked, well as you know I have this problem with sneezing, I certainly do he replied, well I was out in the enchanted forest yesterday and came upon a flower I had never seen before and as soon as the pollen touched the ground another flower would grow, they are also the most beautiful coloured and scented flowers that I have ever seen.

And I never sneezed once.

A piece of it is still attached to the side of my nose and I can’t get it off and if I touch it, it gives of the scent of Peaches and Cream.

Let me see said the grand fairy, he tried to remove the pollen but it would not budge, and each time he tried the scent of peaches and cream became stronger filling the room, why it smelt just as if a fairy was making a peach pie with cream in a kitchen.

No it’s not going to come off said the grand fairy, anyway it looks quite nice, looks like a red ruby, ok said Violet but do you think that because it’s attached to my nose that it has caused my sneezing to stop?

I never thought of that said the grand fairy, but if you can now colour and shake the pollen from other flowers it might be so, have you been around any other flowers apart from those in the enchanted forest he asked.

Yes said Violet I was out in the pastures just before I came to see you and I didn’t sneeze, I was wondering if the pollen on the side of my nose is stopping me sneezing around other flowers.

Well I don’t know said the grand fairy, but if it is I would leave it there and not try to remove it, just enjoy being able to see and smell the flowers without sneezing.

Well up to this day Violet has not sneezed once not even a little

Achoo.

The End
