The Fairy Who Lost Her Voice

By Dave Gore

Once upon a time there was a very beautiful fairy called Stardust, she was a very happy fairy and always tried to help others whenever she could.

The only problem was that she never spoke quietly and sometimes when she spoke, the whole of the fairy palace use to shake and glasses on the table would start to rattle and move slowly across towards the edge, all the other fairies would have to cover their ears because she was so loud.

Stardust was forever being told by the other fairies that she should speak more quietly or one day she would loose her voice. Stardust would laugh and say very loudly, you can’t loose your voice you are just saying that to scare me.

Well one day when Stardust was working in the garden putting the pretty colours back onto all the flowers, she started to sing a little song, because she was singing it loudly she startled some rabbits sitting nearby, they quickly scampered down into their burrow, because they thought that the ground beneath them was going to explode, as it shook so much, the birds that were sitting in the trees nearly fell off the branches as the trees shook and leaves that were once attached to the branches went flying into the air.

Stardust was enjoying herself so much that she didn’t realise how loud she was singing, or all the trouble she was causing to everything around her.

All of a sudden as Stardust sang at the top of her voice, it happened, her voice just flew out of her mouth and shot up and away into the sky, still singing as loud as ever.

Well poor old Stardust didn’t know what to do, she tried shouting for it to come back, but nothing came out of her mouth, not even the tinniest squeak.

She flew after it, but, even with her flying as fast as she could, Stardust just couldn’t catch it, all she could do was watch it slowly disappear from view over the tall mountains in the distance.

Stardust flew slowly back to the palace, tears falling from her blue eyes, she kept thinking to herself, this can’t be happening, but it was, poor Stardust had lost her voice just like the other fairies said she would.

Stardust gently landed by the palace entrance just as two other fairies were flying out into the palace gardens.

“Hello Stardust” they both said together, but Stardust didn’t answer them, “what’s the matter” they asked, as they saw the tears falling slowly down Stardust's cheeks.

Stardust tried to answer, but still no sound came from her mouth. Stardust pointed to her mouth and shook her head, “what do you mean” said the other fairies?

Stardust bent down, picked up a stick from the ground and wrote in the sand at the side of the path, I've lost my voice. Well the other fairies just couldn’t believe it; stardust the noisiest fairy in the land could not speak.

Soon the news had travelled all around the fairy kingdom and all sorts of spells and potions were tried to get Stardust her voice back, but whatever the fairies and wizards tried, stardust still could not speak.

The wisest of all the fairies said to Stardust, “the only way I can see you getting your voice back is to go and search for it”, “or you will never be able to speak again”.

So that afternoon Stardust set of to try and find her voice, she had no idea where to start looking for it, or if she ever would find it.

She decided the best thing to do would be to head towards the mountains where she had last seen her voice heading.

After a few hours Stardust reached the mountains, they stretched right up to the sky, some of them that were covered in snow even poked through the clouds that drifted slowly across the sky, stretching in both directions as far as the eye could see.

Where do I start thought Stardust, I don’t know which way it went when it reached the mountains.

Stardust sat down on a small rock at the foot of the mountain and tried to decide which way to go, do I go up or should I go to my left she thought, but then again what if it went to my right, poor Stardust just could not make up her mind.

All of a sudden a small rabbit poked its head out of a nearby burrow, “what’s the matter” he asked “you don’t look very happy and I’m sure that I have never seen an unhappy fairy before in my life”.

Stardust took out a pencil and a piece of paper and wrote on it, I've lost my voice, it came this way but I don’t know where it went to.

“Was it a singing voice” asked the rabbit, Stardust nodded her head, “and was it really loud” asked the rabbit again? Stardust nodded her head once and then wrote on the paper; please did you see which way it went.

“See it” said the rabbit, “there I was having a little snooze when all of a sudden my home started to shake and the loudest noise I have ever heard made me fall out of my bed”, “well I rushed up to here just in time to see this singing voice disappearing over the top of the mountain”, “mind you it was a very nice song it was singing” said the rabbit.

Stardust wrote on the paper, sorry and thank you.

“That’s all right” said the rabbit “glad to be of assistance, but if you do find it, please ask it to be a bit quieter”, I don’t like being woke up until I am ready”, and with that he disappeared back down his burrow.

Stardust felt a little happier now, at least she knew now which way to start looking for her voice.

With a flap of her wings Stardust was soon flying upwards towards the top of the mountains.

When she reached the top she saw that the mountains stretched way out in front of her, it seemed like a hopeless task, how would she ever find her voice when there were so many places it could be?

But just then she thought she heard a song being sung, the song that she was singing when her voice flew away, she listened very carefully but all that she could hear was the wind whistling in and out of the mountains.

Stardust decided that she would go straight ahead to start with, as perhaps a voice could only fly one way.

Stardust searched high and low, she looked in caves under stones and even in the branches of some trees that grew in the side of the mountains, but still she could not find her voice, or anyone who knew where it could be.

She was just about to give up and make her way back to fairyland, when again she heard a song being sung, this time she knew that it was not her imagination and that it was her voice singing, but it had now become quite dark and there was no way that she would be able to find out where her voice was in the dark.

Stardust then made her way into a small cave that was nearby and settled down on some soft dry moss that lay in the corner of the cave to sleep and wait for morning.

The next morning Stardust was woken by her voice singing in the distance, she quickly got up and started to follow the sound of her voice, the nearer she got to it the louder it sang, Stardust had to cover her ears because her voice was singing so loud, I never realised that I was so loud she said to herself, the other fairies were right I was noisy.

Soon she came upon a very large cave, the noise coming from inside was so loud that the mountain that the cave was on was shaking and large rocks were bouncing down and over Stardust's head into the valley below.

Stardust slowly made her way into the cave; she had to jump from side to side now and again to dodge the smaller rocks that were breaking away from above her.

She turned a corner into a larger cavern and there in front of her was her voice, stuck right in the middle of a large spider’s web.

Stardust flew up to her voice and tried to take it off but it was stuck fast, ‘O’ no she said to herself how am I going to get it off, it won’t budge.

Then all of a sudden a very large spider dropped down from the another web hanging from the roof of the cavern, the spider did look funny, as in both of its ears there were large pieces of cotton wool sticking out.

“Is this your voice” said the spider to stardust, but because of the loud singing, Stardust could not hear what the spider was saying, so she quickly wrote on her paper, that’s my voice stuck to the web could you help me to get it out, and showed the paper to the spider.

The spider nodded and quickly swung into the web.

While Stardust took hold of her voice to stop it flying off again the spider started to loosen the voice from the web.

All of a sudden the voice was free; Stardust quickly put it back into her mouth and then closed it very tight, the loud singing noise stopped immediately.

“That’s better” said the spider, “it’s been driving me mad and I didn’t get a wink of sleep last night”.  “We’ll have you nothing to say”, the spider said to stardust.

Well Stardust was afraid to open her mouth just in case her voice decided to fly off again, but she couldn’t keep her mouth shut all the time she thought.

So slowly she opened her mouth just a little bit at first, then a little bit more, until her mouth was open enough to speak.

“Sorry” she said to the spider very quietly, “I didn’t mean for my voice to keep you awake all night”, “but there was not much that I could do”, “it just flew out of my mouth when I was singing”.

“Well you shouldn’t sing so loud next time” said the spider, “then it wouldn’t be able to, would it?  “Anyway you had better leave now”; “I need to get some sleep”.

Stardust said sorry again and made her way out of the cave back into the mountains.

After flying for a few hours Stardust was back in fairyland with all the other fairies, they all decided to hold a party, to celebrate Stardust getting her voice back.

Stardust promised never to be loud again and to this day she has been one of the quietest fairies in fairyland.
