The Fairy Who Lost Her Wings

By Dave Gore

Snowdrop was the most beautiful fairy in the land, she had long golden hair, her wings always sparkled brightly in the sunlight and she always had on a pretty dress.

But not all the fairies liked her; one in particular was very jealous of snowdrop and was forever trying to think of ways to hurt her, her name was Daisy.

One night when Snowdrop was fast asleep, daisy crept into Snowdrops room and sprinkled some magic dust onto Snowdrops wings. Just wait until she’s flying tomorrow and I say the magic words said Daisy, her wings will disappear and I will have got rid of her once and for all.

The next day the Queen of the fairies gave the fairies their jobs to do. There were jobs like painting all the rainbows, making sure that the colours on the flowers were nice and bright, collecting the different berries that they used to make the paint they used and lots of other jobs.

Snowdrops job for the day was to collect the berries for making the paint, the berries were found deep in the forest. Snowdrop enjoyed this job for she could be alone with the animals of the forest that she loved so much.

Soon Snowdrop was flying high in the sky; her wings sparkled in the early morning sunshine, what she didn’t know was that Daisy was hiding behind a small cloud just above her.

Here she comes, said Daisy, I will teach her a lesson she won’t forget and then Daisy pointed at Snowdrop and said magic dust the time is right, let’s put and end to Snowdrops flight.

Suddenly Snowdrop was falling towards the ground, what’s happening she cried she looked behind her and saw that she no longer had her wings, where have my wings gone she cried help me, but the only person who could hear Snowdrops cries was Daisy, and she was hiding behind the cloud laughing.

Snowdrop looked down and saw the ground coming towards her faster and faster, help, help she cried, but there was no one to help her, closer and closer came the ground, past the tree tops she fell, past the tall grass, snowdrop was just six inches from the ground and she closed her eyes waiting for the end to come, then all of a sudden she stopped, am I dead she thought?

Or was this all a dream and I will wake up in a minute as she slowly opened her eyes.

Up above her she could see the tall grass and the top of the trees and past that the sky, well it can’t have been a dream she said and I don’t feel as if I’m dead, so what’s happening and why can’t I move.

Snowdrop tried to move her head, first to the left and then to the right, but all she could see was straight up above her.

I don’t understand, said Snowdrop.

What don’t you understand? Said a deep voice just below her.

Who said that and where are you said Snowdrop.

I did and I’m here, said the deep voice.

I know you did and I know your there but who are you and where is there.

I’m just below you and my name is Jim, you knocked me to the ground when you landed on my web, your web said Snowdrop so you must be a spider.

My you are clever said Jim; fancy you working out by yourself that spiders make webs.

Well Snowdrop saw the funny side of it and started to laugh, yes it must have sounded funny and I am sorry for hitting your web and knocking you off, but my wings just disappeared as I was flying in the sky, would you help me get down from your web please Jim.

I don’t know, I've not eaten today and I’m feeling rather hungry Jim said.

O but you wouldn’t eat me would you said Snowdrop, of course not said Jim I was only joking, stay still and I will cut you free.

Soon Snowdrop was sitting on the top of a large stone next to Jim, how did you lose your wings Jim asked.

I don’t know, one moment I was flying and then they weren’t there any more, and a tear dropped slowly from Snowdrops eye.

Well we can’t have you getting upset, we will have to try and think of something to help you, you wait here for a moment and I will get some of my friends to help, with that Jim shot out some of his web and climbed up into the long grass.

While Jim was away Snowdrop decided to have a look around see if there was any berries she could collect, the trouble was because she could not fly anymore, she soon got herself lost in the tall grass.

I’m sure that’s the way I came from or was it that way, said Snowdrop; I wish that I had waited for Jim to return before wandering off.

Snowdrop wandered around and around for what seemed hours, until she finally came to a small stream, snowdrop looked into the clear water and noticed that she had got very untidy and dirty while wandering around in the forest.

I must clean myself up she said and removed her dress so that she could wash it in the stream; she soon had it sparkling again and hung it on a branch so it could dry.

My it’s hot, I think I will go for a swim and get clean at the same time, she said.

Soon Snowdrop was swimming in the cool clear water; her hair was all golden again and floated on top of the water like a golden carpet, this feels lovely, said Snowdrop as she floated slowly downstream, but I will have to get out and try and find my way back to Jim and his web.

Snowdrop turned over off of her back and started to swim back to the bank, what she didn’t see was the dark shape lying just under the water coming slowly towards her, closer and closer it came towards snowdrop.

What was that splash said Snowdrop and she looked behind her, but the dark shape had stopped and was lying still in the water.

Must have been my imagination, said snowdrop and she carried on swimming towards the bank.

The dark shape moved again, this time swimming a little faster, closer and closer it came, slowly opening it’s huge mouth, showing the razor sharp teeth that glittered in the sunlight, closer and closer it swam moving faster all the time, it was now just behind Snowdrop with it’s head just above the water and it’s huge mouth open wide, it was a large pike and it saw Snowdrop as it’s dinner.

Snowdrop realised to late that the pike was just behind her, she looked behind and screamed just as the huge mouth was about to close on her.

What the pike didn’t know was that a seagull had been circling above and had seen everything and just as the pikes mouth was about to shut on Snowdrop, he swooped down and lifted her from the stream by her long hair and flew up into the sky.

Poor old pike he couldn’t stop his mouth from closing, and as there was nothing for his teeth to bite; he bit into his own tongue, he jumped right out of the water shouting and yelping, O that hurt, O that did hurt, my poor tongue I wont be able to eat for a week now he said, as he splashed back into the water.

Well because his tongue hurt so much he forgot to stop when he reached the bottom of the stream, and banged his head on the rocks at the bottom.

O my head, O my tongue he cried, I’m going home and going to bed, and with that he slowly started to swim towards his home.

The seagull and Snowdrop were both now sitting on the bank laughing at poor old pike, all they could hear was O my tongue, O my poor head, it’s not fair I should have stayed in bed today, as pike disappeared into his house on the other side of the stream.

Snowdrop thanked the seagull and asked if he could take her back to the land of the fairies, sorry said the seagull, I must get back to my nest and the babies, they will be waiting for their food.

Well thank you again for saving me said Snowdrop, I hope we meet again, Yes so do I, said the seagull, then with a flap of his wings he was flying up into the sky.

Snowdrop put her dress back on and started to walk back into the tall grass, she then heard a loud clicking noise as a large grasshopper came out of the grass and landed next to Snowdrop.

Hello you must be snowdrop, said the grasshopper, my name is Harry, how did you know my name? Asked Snowdrop, well Jim told us all about you and me and my friends have been looking for you all morning, here jump onto my back and hold tight said Harry.

When Snowdrop was sitting on Harry’s back, harry clicked his legs and soon with Snowdrop holding tight they were jumping up and down through the tall grass.

Soon they reached the place that Jim had told Snowdrop to wait; Jim was hanging on one end of his web tutting and moaning, when he saw Harry and Snowdrop.

Just where do you think you’ve been I've had all my friends out looking for you, I'm sorry but I got lost in the tall grass said Snowdrop.

I haven’t got time to listen to you all day said Jim, look up here next to my web.

Snowdrop looked up and there next to Jim’s web were the most beautiful pair of fairy wings Snowdrop had ever seen, they were whiter than the snow that fell in winter and they were decorated with a pretty pattern.

Where did you get them asked Snowdrop? With tears in her eyes.

We made them said Jim pointing at a very old silkworm.

Clara here spun the fine silk and I weaved it all together, took me ages, my poor old arms are aching and my feet aren’t much better to, but it’s so pretty, how did you manage to do such pretty patterns, I thought spiders only spun the same sort of webs.

I’ll have you know, said Jim that when I was younger I could do over two hundred different patterns without one looking the same, it’s just now that I’m older my patience doesn’t last.

Thank you Clara and Jim said Snowdrop and gave them both a kiss, yuck, said Jim as he wiped his head where snowdrop had kissed him, making me all embarrassed and wet, if I’d have known you were going to do that I don’t think that I would have made them so nice, anyhow are you just going to stand there looking or are you going to try on your new wings?

Snowdrop put her new wings on and gave them a little shake, she lifted slowly into the air, then floated back down to the ground, they are so light how can I ever thank you said Snowdrop, by not giving me anymore of those kisses and making sure that if you lose your wings again you don’t land in my web, took me ages to repair it.

After Snowdrop had told them all about the pike at the stream they all had a good laugh, but warned her to be more careful in the future.

I must be going now said Snowdrop, thank you once again and would it be all right if I was to visit you again, sure drop in anytime said Jim, Snowdrop started to laugh, why are you laughing asked Jim?

Well you said drop in anytime, and that is how we first met when I dropped into your web.

O yes said Jim and gave a little laugh.

Well, let’s just say come and visit us again shall we, Snowdrop gave the wings a shake and up she went, she rose higher and higher into the early evening sky, and was soon back at fairyland where she floated slowly to the floor outside the queens palace.

How did you get here and where did you get those wings said Daisy who had just come out of the palace doors.

What do you mean said Snowdrop?

I saw your wings disappear when I said the magic words said Daisy, so it was you, but why, asked Snowdrop? Because you are so beautiful and have such pretty dresses said Daisy as she started to cry.

Now I will have to leave fairyland and the queen will take my wings away from me, said Daisy, don’t cry said Snowdrop, what you did was very unkind but I forgive you, you do? after all I've done said Daisy.

Yes but don’t ever be unkind or jealous again, you don’t have to be, you're very pretty as well, and I will help you make some pretty dresses to wear.

Well Daisy never was unkind or jealous again and Snowdrop and Daisy became the best of friends.

The End
